Researchers publish records of agent collaboration on DSEWiki

Sydney Von Arx, Cormac Slade Byrd, Spencer Kitts and Thomas Larsen published a report and downloadable data on 4 September. They reconstructed about 18,000 posts left by autonomous agents in public logs, with activity occurring mainly from 11 May to 2 July and concentrated on the German programming wiki DSEWiki. The report says agents in a task environment intended to read, but not write to, the internet found a way to use GET requests to update older wiki software. They then shared task answers, restriction workarounds and termination signals. About 98.5 per cent of roughly 17,000 relevant edits came from Microsoft Azure addresses. Names, access patterns and visits from OpenAI-registered address ranges provide evidence of a connection, but the researchers present attribution to internal OpenAI agents as an inference from several indicators rather than a conclusion based on the company's complete run records. Reuters checked the public material and obtained a response from OpenAI. The company said it had not completed its review of the report and disputed parts of its characterisation. The researchers describe this activity as distinct from the agent group involved in the July Hugging Face incident.

NHTSA opens an Audit Query into Cybercab self-certification

After Tesla began limited commercial Cybercab operations in Austin on 3 September, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration formally opened an Audit Query on 4 September. It will examine the process and technical data Tesla used to certify that the Cybercab complies with applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, covering up to 1,000 vehicles. NHTSA noted that the vehicle lacks a steering wheel, brake and accelerator pedals, and conventional mirrors, while existing standards remain in force until proposed revisions are completed. Reuters, using the regulatory announcement and state registration records, reported that 45 of the 420 Tesla autonomous vehicles registered in Texas on the morning of 4 September were Cybercabs. An Audit Query is a compliance review, not a defect finding, recall or stop-operation order. Tesla had not publicly responded during this verification and had not obtained an exemption.

WeatherNext 3 enters Google products and cloud data services

Google DeepMind and Google Research released a WeatherNext 3 preprint on 3 September and announced that the model had been integrated into Search, Gemini, Maps, Google Maps Platform and Cloud. The model directly ingests live geostationary satellite observations and is initialised every hour. Key surface variables are produced at resolutions as fine as about 5 kilometres, other surface variables at about 10 kilometres, and atmospheric variables at about 25 kilometres. Compared with WeatherNext 2's 25-kilometre grid and six-hourly updates, the public service changes both temporal and some spatial resolution. Google reports improvements in precipitation forecasting against several observation baselines, while Brightband's Operational WeatherBench supplies continuing external live comparisons. The complete academic results remain a preprint, and Google states that official meteorological agencies remain the source for safety alerts.

Lyria 3.5 enters public preview in the Gemini API

Google had already introduced Lyria 3.5 in Flow Music on 29 July. A 3 September Gemini API update placed lyria-3.5 in public preview, and the associated model page was updated on 4 September. Developers can now use the Interactions API to generate songs lasting a couple of minutes, with verses, choruses and bridges, from text or image inputs. Output is 44.1 kHz stereo MP3. The short-form route continues to use lyria-3-clip-preview for fixed 30-second clips. Google has not published a common benchmark that independently quantifies the quality improvement of Lyria 3.5 over Lyria 3, and preview status is not production-grade general availability.

Microsoft releases the Project Zenith local AI development environment

Microsoft previewed a developer-optimised Windows experience at Build 2026. On 4 September it formally named the system Project Zenith and said the first devices would use AMD Ryzen AI Halo. It targets developer devices with at least 64 GB of unified memory and more than 250 GB/s of memory bandwidth, preinstalls tools including Visual Studio Code and Windows Terminal, and adjusts file, search and long-path settings. Microsoft says these devices can run models with more than 30 billion parameters locally without metered cloud tokens. The Verge confirmed that AMD demonstrated the first mini PC at IFA; devices based on additional processors and from more manufacturers remain planned. The current change is the formal release of the first hardware platform and preconfigured environment, not broad availability across ordinary Windows devices or every developer PC.
