OpenAI proposes ending direct model provision to Cursor
On 28 August 2026, OpenAI announced that it had notified SpaceX of its intention to wind down the contract under which it provides OpenAI models to Cursor, with a proposed shutoff date of 12 November 2026. Cursor had previously been able to offer OpenAI models directly as part of its multi-model development tool. The formal status has now changed to proposed termination under a transition notice, and OpenAI says it will not provide future models to Cursor during that transition.
Access has not yet been cut off. OpenAI says direct access to existing models will continue during the notice period to give developers time to move. Its announcement attributes the decision to a change-of-control provision following SpaceX's acquisition of Cursor and OpenAI's assessment of compliance with its terms, not to a model failure, an API technical restriction or a security patch. Reuters verified the proposed date on 29 August and reported that Cursor co-founder Michael Truell remained in discussions with OpenAI about resolving the matter. The 12 November date is therefore OpenAI's proposal; the outcome of those discussions and the final scope of implementation remain unsettled.
The confirmed boundary is the direct model-supply contract between OpenAI and Cursor. The available material does not establish whether Cursor users accessing OpenAI through separately held personal or enterprise API accounts would be treated in the same way, nor does it say that Cursor's local models, its own models or models from other suppliers will be withdrawn. Reuters also reported Anthropic's stated plan to increase compute supporting Claude in Cursor, but this is a supply commitment rather than completed capacity delivery. OpenAI and Cursor have not published the number of affected requests, the scale of migration or service-performance data, and there are no benchmark claims in this item requiring independent reproduction.
