“A great way is not a vessel.” The line comes from the Xue Ji chapter of the Book of Rites. It appears beside three parallel claims about great virtue, trust and the seasons, followed by the statement that recognising these four points allows a person to set their mind on learning.
A vessel has a particular use. “Not a vessel” does not belittle tools or practical skill; it says that a genuinely broad principle cannot be boxed into one function. Read today, the line cautions us to use methods for particular problems without turning one method into an answer for everything. Understanding can work in a concrete case while still knowing when a different approach is needed.
