引言Introduction
This dialogue took place in a public discussion on metaphysics. My original intention was not to reject traditional philosophy or theological philosophy, but to raise a structural question about the so-called hard problem of consciousness. Is the hard problem really a problem internal to consciousness itself, or is it partly produced by the way metaphysics has historically framed consciousness?
Sustenesis Theory does not offer a conventional answer to the mind-body relation. It begins from a different starting point. It does not first separate matter and consciousness, body and mind, external process and inner experience, and then try to reconnect them. It begins with sustained relational structure, constraint, stability, and dimensional formation, and from there reconsiders consciousness, experience, and intellect.

Round One: The Original Post
My post
I have been working on a framework I call Sustenesis Theory, and I recently wrote an essay on the so-called hard problem of consciousness. The basic idea is that the “hard problem” may not be a problem inside consciousness itself, but a difficulty created by a traditional philosophical framework that assumes consciousness must be explained from the standpoint of a knowing subject.
In this view, consciousness is not treated as a mysterious inner substance, but as a sustained mode of coherence within a system, something maintained, invoked, corrected, and stabilized through relational constraints. My question is whether the hard problem is really a problem of consciousness, or partly a problem caused by the way metaphysics has historically framed consciousness.
注释Annotation
The point of this post is not to claim that Sustenesis Theory has already solved the problem of consciousness. It first shifts the entrance into the problem. It moves the discussion from “how does matter produce consciousness?” to “why do we frame consciousness as an inner object that must be explained from outside?” This is a restrained opening because it does not dismiss other traditions, but invites critics into the same problem space.
The central issue to preserve here is focus. The discussion is not primarily about whether a particular theological philosopher is important, or whether theological philosophy has answers. It is about whether the hard problem of consciousness is produced or intensified by a particular historical metaphysical framing.

Round Two: The First Response
The response
One respondent asked why the act of understanding reflecting on itself is a problem to be solved, and suggested reading Saint Thomas.
What the response implies
This response performs a shift. It reinterprets my question about the hard problem of consciousness as a question about the act of understanding reflecting on itself, and then immediately redirects the answer toward Saint Thomas. In other words, instead of entering my framing of the hard problem, he redefines the issue through a Thomistic conceptual framework.
The issue is not that Aquinas is mentioned. The problem is that the object of discussion is changed too quickly. My question concerns the origin of the hard problem in modern philosophy of mind, while the response translates it into a Thomistic question about intellect and self-reflection.
My response
I responded that I was not presenting the hard problem as my own problem, but addressing it as it appears within modern philosophy of mind. In the sustenetic view, consciousness is not a mysterious inner substance to be explained, but a sustained mode of coherence within a relationally constrained system. So the issue is not why understanding reflecting on itself is a problem, but whether the problem is partly generated by a metaphysical frame that separates physical process from phenomenal presence in the first place.
My response strategy
The key strategy here is not to react defensively to the suggestion that I should read Saint Thomas, but to clarify the object of the question. This avoids turning the discussion into a test of whether I have read Aquinas, and brings the conversation back to the original issue.
This is an effective way to move the discussion forward. It allows that the other person may have resources from their own tradition, while refusing to let that tradition simply replace the framework of my question.

Round Three: The Appeal to Thomism
The response
The respondent further said that I was describing only the lower operations of the vegetative and sensitive soul, while confusing the organization of physical matter with the power of the intellect. He argued that the modern view fails to explain how we know universal concepts. A relationally constrained physical system may process data about a particular triangle, but the human intellect can grasp Triangularity itself, which is abstract, perfect, and changeless. Because the intellect can grasp immaterial, universal truths, the power of the intellect itself must be immaterial.
He also argued that long before modern philosophy, Aquinas had solved the mind-body split through hylomorphism. The soul is the substantial form of the body, so physical process and conscious life are unified from the start. Since the intellect grasps immaterial objects, the intellect itself must be immaterial. A universal, spiritual intellect cannot be derived from a relationally constrained physical arrangement.
What the response implies
This is a very typical Thomistic response. Its basic logic is that the senses deal with particular objects, while the intellect grasps universals. Since universals are not material, the intellect that grasps them cannot be merely material either.
This response has philosophical content and is not merely emotional. But its problem is that it places Sustenesis directly into the position of modern materialism. It assumes that I am claiming that material organization produces intellect, and then criticizes that claim through the Thomistic argument that universals cannot arise from material configuration.
But Sustenesis Theory does not begin with “matter on one side and consciousness on the other.” It is precisely trying to rethink that division itself. Therefore, even if the critique is valid against some forms of modern materialism, it does not necessarily touch Sustenesis itself.
My response
I responded that I understood the Thomistic concern and agreed that the grasp of universals cannot be reduced to the sensory registration of particular objects.
But I said that his response moved too quickly by placing Sustenesis inside a Thomistic framework before engaging it on its own terms. He was reading my view as if it were a modern materialist attempt to derive intellect from organized matter, but that was not what I was arguing.
Sustenesis does not begin with matter on one side and consciousness or intellect on the other. Nor does it treat intellect as something that must be extracted from a purely physical configuration. It begins prior to that split, with sustained difference, relational constraint, and dimensional formation.
Therefore, when he says that I am confusing the organization of matter with the power of intellect, I think he is assuming the very distinction that Sustenesis is trying to rethink. My claim is not that material organization produces intellect. My claim is that what we call matter, life, sensation, and intellect are different stabilized dimensions within one formative process.
My response strategy
This response makes two important moves. The first is to acknowledge the genuinely valuable point in the other person’s objection, namely that universals cannot be reduced to particular sensations. This matters because it shows that I am not simply avoiding the strongest Thomistic concern.
The second move is to reject the replacement of my framework. I did not simply say “Aquinas is wrong.” I said, in effect, “your critique may work against modern materialism, but it does not yet reach Sustenesis.” This preserves politeness while maintaining theoretical boundaries.
The crucial point in this round is that the discussion should not be pulled into the internal Thomistic question of whether intellect is immaterial. The real question is whether the other person has first understood how Sustenesis reconfigures the relation between matter, life, sensation, and intellect.

Round Four: The Request for More Explanation
The response
The respondent then said that I would need to give more explanation, especially regarding why I chose this route if I think hylomorphism already addresses the problem.
What the response implies
On the surface, this is a request for further explanation. But it still carries a presupposition: that hylomorphism has already addressed the problem, and that Sustenesis must justify why it is needed at all.
This is a subtle form of framework pressure. It does not directly say that Sustenesis is wrong, but it places the entire burden of justification on Sustenesis. The respondent does not first clarify whether he understands Sustenesis on its own terms; instead, he asks why Sustenesis does not simply accept Thomism as the final answer.
My response
I responded that the hard problem of consciousness is not something I introduced arbitrarily. It has been a major issue in philosophy of mind for a long time, and no serious account of mind can simply avoid it.
I respect Aquinas, and I agree that hylomorphism offers a powerful way of addressing the mind-body relation. But respecting Aquinas does not mean fully accepting Thomism, nor does it mean treating Thomism as the only legitimate philosophical framework.
My question is whether hylomorphism explains the first-person character of conscious experience, or whether it mainly redescribes the mind-body relation within its own metaphysical grammar. Sustenesis is my attempt to approach the problem through a different ontology of sustained structure, constraint, and intelligibility.
My response strategy
The function of this response is to redistribute the burden of argument. The respondent cannot simply say “Aquinas has already solved it.” He also needs to specify what Aquinas has solved. Has he solved the unity of body and soul, or has he explained why and how first-person experience arises? These are not the same question.
This is also a good way of narrowing the discussion. It does not reject Aquinas, but presses the issue into a more precise form. Hylomorphism may address the mind-body split, but whether it truly explains the first-person character of conscious experience still requires argument.
The most important thing here is to avoid turning the discussion into a contest over which tradition is superior. My response brings the conversation back from traditional authority to the problem itself: the nature of conscious experience, first-person character, and why Sustenesis proposes a different ontology.

Interim Summary
This dialogue reveals a typical structural problem. Theological philosophy is not without concepts or arguments. On the contrary, it often has a strong systematic structure and dense conceptual resources. The problem is that it can easily treat its own ultimate explanatory framework as the default map. Any different ontology is then translated into that map before being judged inadequate.
In this discussion, the respondent’s main move is to read Sustenesis as a form of modern materialism, and then to criticize it through a Thomistic theory of intellect. But Sustenesis is not saying that matter, once sufficiently organized, produces intellect. Its claim is that matter, life, sensation, consciousness, and intellect should be understood as different stabilized dimensions within one formative process.
This is the point that must be preserved throughout the discussion. Politeness does not mean accepting the other person’s framework, and restraint does not mean abandoning one’s own question. Effective communication means acknowledging the strength of the other tradition while making clear that the critique must reach my actual position, not a version of it translated into the other person’s framework.
From this perspective, the value of the dialogue is not only about Aquinas or the hard problem. More importantly, it shows a basic challenge faced by any new theoretical framework in public discussion: how to get others to understand it on its own terms, rather than immediately classifying it within an older framework.
