English Translation

Dao gives birth,

Virtue nourishes,

Things shape,

Circumstances complete.

Thus all things honor Dao and value virtue.

The honor of Dao and the value of virtue—

No one commands them, yet they are always natural.

Therefore Dao gives birth,

Virtue nourishes;

They grow, are raised, matured, supported,

Cared for and sheltered.

To give life but not possess,

To act but not rely,

To lead but not dominate—

This is called profound virtue.

Q: Why is “giving life without possessing, acting without relying, leading without dominating” called profound virtue?

A: Because it reflects the selfless spirit of Dao—nurturing naturally, without control or ownership.

塞其兑,闭其门,终身不勤;

English Translation

All under Heaven has a beginning,

Which may be called the Mother of the world.

Having found the Mother, one knows the children;

Knowing the children, return to the Mother—

Thus, one is safe to the end of life.

Block the openings, shut the doors,

And you will have no toil all your life.

Open the openings, meddle in affairs,

And you will have no relief all your life.

To see the small is clarity;

To keep to softness is strength.

Use the light, return to clarity,

And no harm will come to you.

This is abiding in constancy.

Q: What does “Mother” symbolize here?

A: It symbolizes Dao. One may know the children (things), but must return to the Mother (origin) to be secure and whole.

English Translation

If I had even the least knowledge,

I would walk the great Dao,

My only fear would be straying from it.

The great Dao is very smooth,

Yet the people love by-paths.

The court is very splendid,

The fields very weedy,

The granaries very empty.

They wear ornate clothes,

Carry sharp swords,

Indulge in food and drink,

Amass wealth beyond measure.

This is called boasting of robbery,

Not Dao at all!

Q: Why criticize “splendid court, weedy fields, empty granaries”?

A: Because rulers indulge in luxury while neglecting farming and livelihood, causing imbalance—this goes against Dao.

修之于身,其德乃真;

修之于家,其德乃余;

修之于乡,其德乃长;

修之于邦,其德乃丰;

English Translation

What is well built cannot be pulled down;

What is well embraced cannot slip away;

Generations will continue their sacrifices.

Cultivate it in the self, and virtue will be true;

Cultivate it in the family, and virtue will overflow;

Cultivate it in the village, and virtue will grow;

Cultivate it in the state, and virtue will abound;

Cultivate it in the world, and virtue will be universal.

Therefore, view the self from the self,

The family from the family,

The village from the village,

The state from the state,

The world from the world.

How do I know the world is like this?

By this.

Q: What is the core emphasis of this chapter?

A: Cultivation of virtue spreads outward—from self to family, to village, to state, to world—until it becomes universal.

English Translation

One who embodies great virtue

Is like a newborn child.

Poisonous insects will not sting,

Fierce beasts will not seize,

Birds of prey will not strike.

Bones are weak, muscles soft, yet the grip is firm.

Unaware of the union of male and female,

Yet full of vitality—this is the perfection of essence.

Crying all day without hoarseness—this is the perfection of harmony.

Knowing harmony is constancy;

Knowing constancy is clarity.

Excess of life is ominous;

The mind forcing the breath is strength.

What is strong soon ages—

This is not Dao,

What is not Dao soon perishes.

Q: Why compare “great virtue” to a “newborn child”?

A: Because infants are pure and harmonious, not struggling yet full of life. Those of deep virtue live naturally, embodying vitality and harmony.
