English:

In the section on “Spirit,” Hegel shows how reason develops into a higher unity—the unity of individual and universal. Spirit is no longer abstract reason but the communal spirit realized in society, history, and ethical life. Its development includes alienation and conflict, but ultimately spirit achieves freedom through self-knowledge and community. This section marks a major turning point, moving from individual reason to communal spirit.

(Geist)

Hegel’s concept of “Spirit” (Geist) is very different from what we usually mean by “spirit” in everyday language. In fact, they operate on almost two entirely different levels.

1. “Spirit” in Everyday Language

In ordinary usage, “spirit” usually refers to:

  • Mental state: e.g., feeling energetic or exhausted, relating to an individual’s consciousness, mood, or attention.
  • Consciousness or mind: e.g., “spiritual strength” or “national spirit,” often pointing to psychological or sociological abstractions.
  • Something opposed to matter: the immaterial, intangible side of things.

This sense of “spirit” stays mostly within the experiential realm, tied directly to human psychology or cultural identity.

2. Hegel’s “Spirit” (Geist)

Hegel’s “Spirit,” however, is a core philosophical category, highly abstract and systematic:

  • Absolute in nature: For Hegel, Spirit is not an individual’s mind but the ultimate driving force of reality and history. It is the “totality of self-consciousness” and the unfolding of reason in the world.
  • A developmental process: Spirit is not static but unfolds dialectically through stages:
    • From Subjective Spirit (the individual’s mind and psychological life),
    • To Objective Spirit (social institutions, law, morality, the state),
    • Finally to Absolute Spirit (art, religion, philosophy), where Spirit fully comprehends itself.
  • Linked with history: Hegel believed world history is the story of Spirit’s self-realization, with all events, nations, and cultural achievements representing different stages in its unfolding.

3. The Core Difference

We might summarize it this way:

  • Everyday “spirit” = psychological phenomena of individuals or cultural traits of groups.
  • Hegel’s “Spirit” = the rational principle underlying existence and history, the unfolding of freedom and reason itself.

In short, everyday “spirit” is a psychological or cultural phenomenon, while Hegel’s “Spirit” is the philosophical ground of history and reality.

Hegel’s concept of Spirit is the synthesis of individual reason and collective norms. However, Spirit is not a static existence but a process, comparable to potential energy in physics. It possesses a kind of directional force, representing a tendency and pointing toward an ultimate goal. Therefore, in Hegel’s view, the ultimate direction of human and social development is the continual movement toward the Absolute Spirit.

This metaphor is already very close to Hegel’s idea of “Spirit.” It can be understood in this way:

  • The many people in the room → symbolize the existing social norms, shared values, and cultural traditions.
  • The newcomer → symbolizes individual freedom, subjectivity, and unique reason.
  • The process of integration → is the movement of Spirit: the individual must find their place within the existing atmosphere, while also potentially bringing new changes.

Hegel would say that this process is not a simple “assimilation,” but an interaction: while the individual accepts collective norms, they also, through their actions and reflections, help advance the development of the collective Spirit. Thus, “Spirit” is not a static atmosphere but a whole that is constantly unfolding and transforming.
