(Self-Consciousness)
IV. (The Truth of Self-Certainty)
(Desire)
(Core Ideas)
- English: Hegel argues that self-consciousness is not merely “I think”; it first manifests as “desire.” The essence of desire lies in negating external objects and incorporating them into the self.
- English: However, satisfaction through destroying or possessing objects is temporary, since objects are constantly changing, and desire is endless.
- English: Thus, what self-consciousness truly seeks is not things, but “recognition by the other,” which alone provides stable self-confirmation.
(Summary)
- English: Desire is the driving force of self-consciousness, but it finds no final satisfaction in negating objects. True satisfaction comes from “recognition,” i.e., establishing the self in the other. Desire reveals the limits of self-consciousness and drives it toward relation with the other.
(Q&A Analysis, 20 Pairs)
Q1 English: Why does Hegel connect self-consciousness with “desire”?
- English Answer: Because self-consciousness affirms itself by negating the object.
Q2 English: How is desire satisfied?
- English Answer: By possessing, destroying, or assimilating the object.
Q3 English: Why is this satisfaction temporary?
- English Answer: Because external things constantly change, and desire continually arises.
Q4 English: How does desire differ from animal needs?
- English Answer: Animal needs are physiological, whereas human desire includes the pursuit of freedom and recognition.
Q5 English: Why can desire not fully satisfy self-consciousness?
- English Answer: Because desire is directed at external objects, while self-consciousness truly needs self-establishment.
Q6 English: What is the relation between desire and recognition?
- English Answer: Desire drives the self to go beyond material possession and seek recognition from the other.
Q7 English: Why does Hegel regard recognition as more fundamental than desire?
- English Answer: Because recognition establishes the self itself, not external things.
Q8 English: How does desire express the negativity of self-consciousness?
- English Answer: By negating the object, it shows the self as transcending finite things.
Q9 English: What does the infinity of desire indicate?
- English Answer: It indicates that self-consciousness will never be satisfied with finite objects, seeking higher fulfillment instead.
Q10 English: Why does Hegel move from desire to recognition?
- English Answer: Because satisfaction through desire is unstable; self must be established through recognition.
Q11 English: Does desire imply dependence of self-consciousness?
- English Answer: Yes, it depends on external things for confirmation, but this dependence is insufficient.
Q12 English: Why does desire show the limitation of self-consciousness?
- English Answer: Because it always depends on external things, which can never provide final self-establishment.
Q13 English: How does desire drive historical development?
- English Answer: Human history is the process of desire continually seeking higher forms of fulfillment.
Q14 English: How is desire philosophically transcended?
- English Answer: Through recognition, desire shifts from objects to subjects.
Q15 English: What is the relation between desire and Kant’s philosophy?
- English Answer: Kant emphasizes reason and will, while Hegel shows the contradictions and development of self-consciousness through desire.
Q16 English: Why does Hegel see desire as the germ of freedom?
- English Answer: Because desire shows that the self is not content with nature but seeks to transcend and master it.
Q17 English: How is the negativity of desire related to labor?
- English Answer: Labor is a durable form of desire, satisfying and affirming the self by transforming nature.
Q18 English: Why is desire not the endpoint of self-consciousness?
- English Answer: Because it cannot provide stable self-confirmation and must move into recognition.
Q19 English: How does recognition solve the problem of desire?
- English Answer: Recognition establishes self-consciousness through the free will of the other, no longer relying on objects.

- English Answer: It shows the transition of self-consciousness from material possession to social relations, serving as the premise for the master–slave dialectic.
