(Introduction Overview)

Kritik der Urteilskraft – Vorwort und Einleitung

(Introduction Overview)

English

At the beginning of the Critique of Judgment, Kant points out:

  • There is a gap within reason’s system: on one side stands the necessity of natural laws (the scientific world), and on the other side, the freedom of the moral world.
  • The first two Critiques dealt with these domains separately, but there seems to be no direct bridge between them.
  • The task of judgment (Urteilskraft / power of judgment) is to provide a transition between nature and freedom, so that human reason can form a complete whole.

Kant distinguishes between two types of judgment:

  1. Determining judgment (determinierende Urteilskraft): when a rule is already given → we apply it to particular phenomena.
    • Example: observing a stone and explaining its motion through physical laws.
  2. Reflective judgment (reflektierende Urteilskraft): when no rule is given → we must seek a rule or a sense of purposiveness.
    • Example: when facing the beauty of nature, we feel a universal harmony without a pre-given scientific law.

From here, Kant introduces two central themes:

  • Aesthetic judgment: How are beauty and the sublime possible?
  • Teleological judgment: Can nature be understood as purposive?

(Summary)

In short: The Critique of Judgment aims to reconcile the worlds of nature and freedom through the mediating function of judgment, particularly in aesthetics and teleology.

English Q&A

Q1: Why did Kant write a third Critique?

A: Because the first two Critiques solved the problems of knowledge and morality, but there remained a gap between natural necessity and moral freedom. The power of judgment is needed to bridge this gap.

Q2: How does judgment differ from reason and understanding?

A: Understanding supplies rules, reason seeks the unconditioned, but judgment is the faculty that subsumes particulars under rules or seeks rules for them.

Q3: Why distinguish between determining and reflective judgment?

A: Because in science we already have rules (determining), but when facing beauty or organisms, we lack pre-given rules and must search for purposiveness (reflective).

Q4: What is the difference between aesthetic judgment and scientific judgment?

A: Scientific judgment appeals to knowledge and necessity, while aesthetic judgment appeals to pleasure and a sense of purposiveness.

Q5: Why can aesthetic judgment claim universality?

A: Although it is subjective, it appeals to a “common sense” (sensus communis), the shared rational and sensible structure of humanity.
