Recently, the image of the Shanghai \u201cOld Kla\u201d has become increasingly
popular online. Elegant suits, hats, coffee, jazz, classical music and
the streets around the Bund together create a recognisable image of old
Shanghai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yet the historical Old Kla and today\u2019s internet image are no longer the
same thing. What survives today is largely a cultural symbol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I have always felt a certain distance from this culture. It is not
because of Western music or coffee. Rather, it comes from the historical
narrative surrounding old Shanghai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many people celebrate Shanghai of the 1920s and 1930s as the greatest
city in the Far East. I have never shared that feeling. China at that
time was weak and divided. The prosperity of the Bund existed, but it
emerged within a broader history of national hardship. For that reason,
I have never regarded that prosperity as something that naturally
inspires pride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps this is my own historical bias, and it is unlikely to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What interests me more is why this image still attracts people today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gradually I realised that the real subject is not Shanghai itself, but
cultural identity. Culture can either broaden our understanding of the
world or become a way of confirming our identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This leads naturally to the same structure discussed in my earlier essay
on \u201cCounty-Town Mentality\u201d. A county town is not merely a place; it
represents a psychological position based on relative comparison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Viewed in this way, the Shanghai Old Kla becomes one example of a much
broader phenomenon. The same psychological pattern can appear wherever
people define themselves through relative status rather than through an
expanding understanding of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The greatest value of culture is not to prove that we are superior to
others. Its greatest value is to enlarge the world we are capable of
