1. Logic in general is the science of the rules of the understanding. These rules are rules of thought as such, not of intuition. They are valid a priori and independently of all empirical conditions, for otherwise they would not yield necessity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. General logic abstracts from all content of knowledge, that is, from all relation of knowledge to its object, and regards only the logical form in the relation of knowledge to the understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. But since in the Transcendental Aesthetic we have shown that there are pure a priori intuitions, space and time, which underlie all intuitions as their mere form, it follows that there must also be concepts a priori which likewise underlie all thought of objects in general, and so all knowledge of them, in so far as it rests upon the understanding. A science of the rules of the understanding in so far as they relate a priori to objects will therefore be a transcendental logic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Transcendental logic has, then, to deal with the laws of understanding and of reason, but solely in so far as they relate a priori to objects, and not, as general logic, in relation to empirical as well as pure knowledge of reason without distinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Transcendental logic will therefore contain the rules of the pure thought of an object, and thereby a priori the conditions under which objects can be given in agreement with these concepts. Otherwise they would be empty concepts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Content: Formal logic deals only with the form of thinking \u2014 whether reasoning follows proper rules (e.g., syllogisms, the law of non-contradiction, the law of identity). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Feature: It does not care about the content of thought; as long as the reasoning process is correct, the argument counts as valid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aim: To secure consistency and avoid contradictions in thought. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Status: Kant thought that, since Aristotle, formal logic was already essentially complete, with little substantial progress made afterwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Transcendental Logic<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Content: Transcendental logic does not study forms of thought as such, but the conditions for the possibility of knowledge of objects. It is not about \u201cwhether reasoning is valid,\u201d but \u201chow pure reason can yield knowledge about objects.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Feature: It deals with the relation between thought and objects, investigating the a priori conditions (such as categories, forms of intuition) that make experience possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aim: To explain why some knowledge (e.g., universal and necessary propositions in mathematics and natural science) is possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Division: Kant divides it into the \u201cTranscendental Analytic\u201d (how the categories of the understanding make objects of experience possible) and the \u201cTranscendental Dialectic\u201d (how misuses of reason generate illusions).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
