class="p1 wp-block-paragraph">From the perspective of some non-Christians, the doctrine of “loving your enemies” seems to suggest that Christians no longer distinguish between good and evil, nor uphold any firm moral stance, as if they simply tolerate or even indulge all kinds of behavior. This interpretation often leads them to think that Christians lack principles, or in other words, “have no bottom line.”

However, the Christian teaching of “loving your enemies” is not about abolishing moral judgment, but rather about a transcendent way of confronting evil. Christians still uphold the distinction between sin and righteousness, good and evil. The difference is that when facing hostility, harm, or injustice, they choose not to respond with hatred or revenge, but with forgiveness, patience, and active goodwill. The key point here is this: moral standards remain intact, but the manner of response goes beyond the common “eye for an eye” logic.

This tension is often misunderstood: non-Christians may think “not punishing is equivalent to condoning,” while Christians emphasize that “punishment is not the same as hatred.” Hatred cannot truly bring an end to evil—it only produces new evil. From a theological perspective, Christians believe that judgment ultimately belongs to God. The human task is to maintain an inner commitment to goodness and love, rather than be consumed by hatred.

In other words, loving one’s enemies is not the absence of morality, but rather a higher moral stance: even in the face of evil, one does not abandon the pursuit of good.

On the other hand, non-Christians also carry a skepticism toward this teaching, because Christian history is filled with records of bloodshed. As a result, they sometimes see the idea of “loving enemies” as hypocritical propaganda. Personally, I don’t think it is hypocritical, though I admit the reality is complex—Christian history itself is very complex. From a practical perspective, and based on direct personal experience, I believe this teaching is not hypocrisy. Christians believe in God, but Christians themselves are not God; they are not perfect.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
"_jetpack_featured_image_duplicate_dismissed":0
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[780925312
1098,401,116,246769
post-10185","post","type-post","status-publish","format-image","hentry","category-reflections","tag-culture","tag-faith","tag-religion","tag-246769","post_format-post-format-image","","has-post-thumbnail","fallback-thumbnail
One Common Misunderstanding Non-Christians Have About Christians: Loving Enemies Means Having No Moral Standards非基督徒对基督徒的误解之一，爱敌人就是没有道德标准
["GET
