When I arrived at Ceduna, I encountered a quarantine checkpoint. My bag of oranges, a few apples, and some bananas were all handed over\u2014it felt like a welcome gift to South Australia. I\u2019m not sure whether these quarantine policies between South Australia and Western Australia actually have any real effect, or if it\u2019s just the two states being stubborn with each other. But South Australia is clearly being lazy here\u2014the checkpoint is set up 480 kilometers past the border. They don\u2019t want to establish it out there in the desolate, uninhabited zone. But what\u2019s the point of putting a checkpoint so deep inside South Australia\u2019s interior? No wonder the staff immediately asked me if I was coming from WA. I should have told them I was from Canberra\u2014see how they\u2019d figure out where the fruit came from. Still, they probably know that for hundreds of kilometers before this, there\u2019s no sign of settlement and no place to buy fruit anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, after reaching Bookabie, you can already see flocks of sheep and grasslands\u2014the most barren stretches are behind you. The trees on both sides gradually become taller and denser, and the scenery grows more beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At this point, I had completed the three major crossings of my Australian road trip. From here to Adelaide, if I take the coastal route, it will basically all be green and continuous. Of the three crossings, the one from Queensland to the Northern Territory was vast and wild, but I never felt afraid. The road into Uluru even gave me a sense of reassurance\u2014desolate, yes, but still the very heart of Australia. The crossing from Western Australia to South Australia turned out much better than expected\u2014vast, but not bleak at all. The bleakest part was actually from the Northern Territory into WA, all the way south to Perth, through multiple mining areas. Those thousands of kilometers were practically wasteland\u2014no wonder there are so many open-pit mines, because in many places there isn\u2019t even real soil. To make it worse, the days I drove through there were cloudy and windy. It felt like being on Mars. Sometimes I wouldn\u2019t see a single vehicle for hours. For a moment, I had this eerie, unreal feeling\u2014surrounded by endless wilderness, driving for days and still not reaching the edge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just now, I finished checking into a campsite, had a shower, washed my clothes, and made myself a cup of tea. It feels so good to be \u201cback on Earth.\u201d Humanity took tens of thousands of years to move from wilderness to civilization; crossing Australia feels like retracing the entire history of civilization. I joked with a friend that this road trip around Australia has been like a mental stretching exercise, a kind of gymnastics for the spirit. Unlike short trips or expeditions, this two-to-three-month journey has forced me to treat each day as if it were the first\u2014keeping my body, nutrition, energy, spirit, and emotions all in balance. That\u2019s the only way to make it sustainable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I feel deeply grateful\u2014for having such an opportunity, being in such good condition, and experiencing Australia in this special way. Vast and magnificent land, with mountains, oceans, rivers, lakes, sand dunes, wetlands, grasslands, forests, and so many different kinds of people\u2014so friendly, optimistic, and full of sunshine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From here on, my journey will gradually return to familiar territory. When I once again see those familiar trees and grasses, perhaps I\u2019ll see them with new eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
